a collage 6 flavours of greek yogurt

Just looking at that picture makes me so happy because those are breakfast scenes every day. I’ve been trying out a lot of fruit based Greek yogurt every morning and while Denver is mostly an egg-for-breakfast sort of a person, there is always a plea to save him the last bite at the breakfast table.

Because homemade Greek yogurt flavors are really the best guys! While I love yogurt, Greek or regular, I’m always squeamish about picking one of those packaged flavors, however delicious they may be. I can’t read beyond the 13 gms. of sugar or added flavoring agent that most of them seem to have on the pack. This is supposed to be healthy and clean and good for you, and a pack of flavored Greek yogurt probably isn’t.

Before I find that one brand that makes me say yes to flavored Greek yogurt, I’m happy making my own and I have a ton of options for you too!

Before we get into the recipes for these homemade Greek yogurt flavors, let’s just go over a few details.

What’s the difference between regular yogurt and Greek yogurt?

The process to make regular yogurt and Greek yogurt remains the same. Milk is heated and then cooled to the right temperature before adding the culture and then left to ferment and set. To make Greek yogurt, the yogurt is strained in a cheesecloth to remove whey and lactose till you get a creamy, thick mixture that we call Greek Yogurt. This can easily be done at home. You can also check out this post if you’d like to make it at home.

In India, where the temperatures are super conducive, you don’t need a slow cooker to make Greek yogurt, just a dark, warm area in your kitchen where you can leave the yogurt to set.

How do you make homemade Greek yogurt flavors?

I have a simple ratio to make homemade Greek yogurt flavors. If you are using fruit, you need 1/2 cup fruit (pureed) + 1 cup Greek Yogurt + 1 tsp Honey or Maple Syrup (optional). For other variants the amount of seasoning, spices or sweeteners you need to add will vary, which is why I have these six recipes for you to use as a guideline.

How long do these flavored Greek yogurt’s last?

I usually end up buying plain Greek Yogurt and like the brand Epigamia. I make sure to buy the freshest packs and make a few flavors every Sunday . These homemade flavored Greek Yogurt packs last me between 5-6 days when refrigerated. If you are making Greek yogurt at home, the shelf life will be the same. After that, the yogurt starts becoming sour.

Just follow these simple guidelines and you’ll be armed with the best homemade Greek yogurt flavors all week long!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Blueberries
  • 1 cup Greek Yogurt, plain and unsweetened
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon Honey, (optional)

Instructions

  • Add blueberries and 3 tablespoons water to a pan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 5-7 minutes till the berries break down and start becoming mushy. Set aside to cool. The blueberry coulis will thicken up as it cools.
  • Once the blueberry coulis is cool, mix together Greek yogurt, blueberry coulis, vanilla extract and honey, if using. Refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Notes

I’ve tried blending the blueberries into a puree instead of cooking it, but it changes color a bit. You can also go ahead and puree it instead of cooking if you don’t care as much about the color of the yogurt.

  1. When making Greek yogurt (I make mine in an instant pot) at what point/time in the process do I add the vanilla for my flavoring? Do I add it during the process,at the beginning or at the end? Is it added afterwards? Does it sit for awhile,if so about how long?

  2. I have a fruit puree frozen into cubes that I use to add when I make yogurt for my toddler and it’s good when made and eaten immediatly. However, if I try to make it even the night before when we go to eat it the next day it is bitter and not at all good. I can’t figure out why that is or how to fix it. I use the same cubes to make applesauce squeeze packs for her as well and have no issues with those being made ahead of time. Thoughts? Ideas?

  3. Hello! I was wondering if I’d be able to make a whole tub of one of these flavors for my 18 month old. I read that the shelf life would be 5-6 days, but I know a regular tub of plain Greek yogurt lasts a lot longer than that. Thoughts?

    1. Hey Jennifer, store bought Greek Yogurt usually has added chemicals to make it last longer, and their packaging is also different. Since these are all natural and made with real fruit, I wouldn’t recommend keeping them for longer than a week.

  4. You are on my wavelength – I quit feeding myself and my kids flavoured yoghurt about 2 years ago after watching Jamie Oliver’s Sugar Rush. It was a real eye-opener. My kids would welcome some new flavours to add to our home flavoured selection.
